I am absolutely and completely disgusted and insulted. Not at Derpy's name, but at the people who want her removed. What -if- she's mentally challenged? Naturally she's not allowed to appear on Television because people with Mental Disability are not allowed to be represented on Television.
They've allowed people of different colors to be seen on public television, but somehow WE missed out on that deal. WE are the people who have the mental disabilities, WE have rights, and WE are offended by these actions, not at the icons who represent us. It is time that WE as a single group rise up and show them what truly offends us, rather than let those who hate people with mental disabilities, the ones who lie and call themselves "Moral Guardians" to hide their discrimination have to say.
me-(give derpy a hug) don't cry derpy, your not offensive, some ponys are just over f**king sensitive and should be ashamed for making you feel bad (let go of derpy and ponit and point gun at the oversensitive cry baby) APOLOGIZE TO HER NOW!!!
If ANYONE should be offended by Derpy, it would be me. I have had eye problems all my life (I have a glass eye) and have been teased MERCILESSLY as a child because of it. A lot of harm was brought upon me by my eyes.
However, Derpy is a beautiful, fun and caring pony. She has become my favorite. I squealed when she spoke and was so happy! I felt I had a comrade in the Brony community.
Derpy is not an offensive name in the least. A Derp is a type of Oopsie.
I think part of the issue is that people see the word "derpy" as meaning different things. I agree with you that Derpy is a charming pony and I feel a lot more connected to her because I got glasses in second grade and I also was teased mercilessly (kids can be horrible ).
Some people see the word "derpy" as meaning stupid rather than something more like clumsy or awkward or forgetful (I think of it as being somewhere between those three). If you think of the word as meaning stupid, then calling her Derpy is much like calling her Retard. That's pretty horrible to a whole other group of people.
I don't know if there is a good solution for this one other than to acknowledge that folks are probably disagreeing because they see the words as meaning different things, not because we're trying to mock people.
I love Derpy because she's a sweet, special pony who represents people who aren't perfect (i.e. me). I understand that isn't going to fly for everyone, but it makes me sad that what I see as inclusive is ripping the community apart so much.
I especially hope they don't remove her from the show. The solution is never to "just go back to only showing perfect people". Making the imperfect invisible doesn't solve anything.
